The basics

What Is a Custom Balloon Installation?

If it hangs overhead, spans a room, takes on a shape or carries a logo, it's an installation.

An installation is balloon decor designed for one particular space and built on-site, generally bigger or more structural than an arch, garland or column. Think balloons covering the ceiling over a dance floor, a cloud floating above a sweetheart table, a 30-foot entrance arch for a store opening, a giant mosaic number, a walk-through tunnel or a logo built in three dimensions. This is the point where balloon decor turns into balloon art.

Because the design depends on the room, we start with measurements and a sketch rather than a menu of sizes. Choose an installation when the space is huge, the guest list matters (a gala, a launch, a wedding) or you want guests to see something new. For standard pieces, see balloon arches, garlands, walls, columns and backdrops.

What we install

Types of Custom Balloon Installations

These are the builds Charlotte venues, businesses and hosts ask us about most.

Balloon ceilings

A balloon ceiling fills the space above the guests. It can be helium balloons resting against the ceiling with ribbons trailing down, air-filled balloons hung upside down at staggered heights, or garlands swagged from wall to wall. Barn venues with open rafters and plain gyms are perfect candidates. It's one of the most-requested looks for proms, quinceañeras, wedding receptions and holiday parties.

Hanging balloons, canopies and chandeliers

Suspended pieces put the decor above eye level so the floor stays clear: a garland floating over a farm table, a balloon canopy across a dance floor or inside a wedding tent, or balloons wrapped around a chandelier the venue already has (or one we build on a hoop).

Balloon clouds

A cloud is a soft, billowy mass of white and clear balloons, sometimes with a few pastel or metallic accents, hung above a table or used as a dreamy backdrop. Cloud nine birthdays, baby showers and romantic wedding setups use them most.

Balloon drops

Hundreds of balloons wait overhead in a net or bag, then tumble down on cue: at midnight, at a gender reveal, as the couple walks in, during the last song or the second a new product is unveiled. We rig the net before doors open, and a pull cord or one of our crew lets it go at the right second.

Balloon sculptures and balloon art

Sculptures take on a recognizable form: an oversized number, a race car, a pineapple, a cake, a mascot or a company logo. Balloon art pieces for schools, galleries and brand activations can be built life-size or larger.

Balloon trees, palm trees and topiaries

Balloon palm trees for luaus and pool parties, topiaries for formal dinners and balloon Christmas trees for lobbies and office parties all stand on their own, working like balloon columns with a shape on top.

Balloon tunnels

A tunnel is a row of arches set close together for guests to walk through. It makes a memorable wedding entrance, school hallway, fun-run finish line or ribbon-cutting approach.

Balloon mosaics, number towers and marquee letters

Picture a giant cut-out number, letter or heart, then fill it with tightly packed small balloons so it reads like a pixel image. Mosaics spell out an age, a monogram or a graduating year, and marquee letters wrapped in balloons add a glow. Birthday and graduation hosts ask for them constantly.

Balloon wreaths and giant balloons

Balloon wreaths frame a front door or a welcome sign. Giant balloons, 36 inches and up and sometimes stuffed with confetti, create big moments at gender reveals, proposals and photo shoots.

Process

How a Custom Installation Comes Together

Larger builds take more planning. Here's what the process looks like.

  1. 1

    Brief

Share the event, the date, the venue and the idea. Photos, mood boards and brand guidelines all help.

  2. 2

    Site details

We confirm room size, ceiling height, rigging points, power, load-in times and house rules, either in person or from your photos and measurements.

  3. 3

    Design and quote

You receive a design plan and a written quote. Large installations are priced by scope, not by the foot.

  4. 4

    Build day

We load in during the venue's window, build on-site and walk through it with you before the doors open.

  5. 5

    Strike

Everything comes down at the end of the night or the next morning, whichever the venue requires.

Venue rules worth asking about early: uptown hotels and event centers in Charlotte commonly assign load-in and strike windows through a loading dock and freight elevator, ask vendors for a certificate of liability insurance, limit or ban helium tanks, forbid tape on walls and need approval before anything hangs from the ceiling. Older mill and warehouse venues can have their own limits on what attaches to beams. We sort these out before quoting so build day holds no surprises.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Installations Cost in Charlotte?

Custom installations start at $450 and grow with the size and complexity of the build.

Large builds are quoted after we measure the space. Venue load-in rules and late-night strikes can add to the total.

What sets the price of an installation: the area or length covered, how many balloons and what sizes, rigging and lift needs (ceiling height matters a lot), helium, crew hours, overnight or after-hours load-in, insurance paperwork for the venue, and a same-night strike. Send us the venue and the ceiling height and we'll scope it properly.

Occasions

Balloon Installations for Weddings, Proms, Holidays and Big Moments

Installations are for the events where guests walk in and stop to look up.

  • New Year's Eve: a balloon drop at midnight, black-and-gold chrome ceilings and countdown walls.
  • Christmas and holiday parties: balloon trees for the lobby, snowy white ceilings for the office party and frosty arches at the door.
  • Halloween: spooky sculptures, orange-and-black garlands and haunted walk-through tunnels.
  • Weddings: a cloud above the sweetheart table, a ceiling over the dance floor and a drop for the first dance or the send-off.
  • Gender reveals: balloon drops, giant confetti balloons and cloud reveals.
  • Prom, homecoming and graduation: a balloon-covered gym ceiling, a tunnel at the entrance and the class year built as a mosaic.
  • Quinceañeras: a ceiling over the dance floor, a tunnel for the court's entrance and a mosaic of her initial.
  • Birthdays: drops for milestone birthdays and mosaic numbers for the age.

Timing

How Far Ahead to Book a Balloon Installation

Give a large installation three to six weeks.

A mosaic number or a living-room balloon drop can often be scheduled with a week or two of notice. Anything bigger (ceilings, tunnels, sculptures, or any build inside a hotel or event venue) wants three to six weeks so there's time to design it, get the venue's sign-off and order specialty balloons. December weekends, New Year's Eve, spring prom season and the graduation rush from late May into June are claimed first.

Questions

Custom Balloon Installations in Charlotte: FAQ

How much do balloon installations cost in Charlotte?

Our custom builds begin at $450. A mosaic number starts at $225 and a marquee letter rental at $50 each. Ceilings, drops, tunnels and sculptures get their own quote based on scale, rigging and how many crew hours the build takes.

What is a balloon ceiling?

It means the decor is above you instead of beside you. We either float helium balloons up against the ceiling with ribbons dangling, hang air-filled balloons on lines at staggered heights, or swag garlands from one side of the room to the other.

What is a balloon drop?

It's a net or bag of balloons hung above the crowd and opened on cue, so hundreds of balloons rain down at the countdown, the reveal, the grand entrance or the last dance.

How many balloons does a balloon drop need?

About 100–250 for a living room or small space, and 500–1,500 or more for a dance floor or ballroom. The size of the drop zone and the ceiling height decide the number.

What is a balloon mosaic?

A balloon mosaic is a frame shaped like a number, letter or symbol and filled with small balloons in a pattern, a little like a pixel image. Mosaic numbers and letters are popular for birthdays, graduations and anniversaries.

How long do ceiling balloons last?

Helium ceiling balloons look their best for roughly 8–12 hours. Air-filled hanging installations last several days indoors.

How far in advance should I book a balloon installation?

Give us three to six weeks for anything structural or venue-based, like a ceiling, tunnel or sculpture. A mosaic number or a balloon drop at home usually needs only one to two weeks.

Do venues allow balloon installations?

Usually yes, within their house rules. Expect to need a vendor insurance certificate, an assigned load-in and strike time, and approval for helium, anything hung overhead and anything touching the walls. We check all of that with the venue before quoting.

What is balloon art?

Balloon art covers sculptures and large designed pieces built from balloons, from giant numbers and logos to characters and full-room installations. It's a different craft from twisting balloon animals at a party.
